Teen Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Teens with this disorder experience extreme mood swings, which include feeling very energetic and irritated. These mood swings are what make bipolar disorder different from depression. People with depression don’t experience the manic mood swings that someone with bipolar disorder does. A teenager’s bipolar disorder not only affects the individual, it impacts the person’s family as well. This illness cannot be cured, but therapy has been known to alleviate the symptoms of this disorder. Some factors that may affect bipolar disorder in teens include medication as well as environmental factors. This illness can also be genetic if any other family member has it.

  • Family members should support the teen with bipolar disorder. They must let the teen know that it is the disorder that is causing his or her problems.
  • Family member should seek help for their own mental illness, as this will encourage the teen to do the same.
  • Parents should encourage their teens to partake in activities like yoga, walks, and music listening.
