ADHD or ADD in Teens

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. Teens who suffer from ADD or ADHD are extremely talkative, restless, and fidget often. Such teens are very active but have trouble paying attention, may forget things very fast, and may interrupt others while they are talking.

Teens who are suffering from ADD or ADHD have troubles being organized and find it difficult to concentrate on school work.

Teens who are suffering from this problem have issues maintaining good relationships. They often say things without thinking and suffer from a short attention span. They tend to interrupt private conversations and disturb others. Because of their behavior, most teens suffering from either condition may lose friends, feel isolated, and get depressed. Such teens may even be teased at school because of their short attention span and their restless behavior.

 

Tips for Teens and Parents with ADD/ADHD

  • Teens who are suffering from this problem should avoid sitting near the window, because it can be distracting.
  • When a class is in session, teens with this problem should avoid sitting with other students.
  • They should keep a journal of all homework, tests, and assignments, and check it every day.
  • Teens with either problem should speak to their teachers and ask for help if they need it.
  • They need to learn to be more expressive of their feelings.
  • They should speak with their friends about their insecurities and ask for their support.
  • They can become involved in activities like a favorite sport or hobby.
  • They should consult a therapist if needed.
  • Parents should keep in contact with teachers and counselors about their teen.
  • Parents should help their teen with school work.
  • Parents should frequently communicate with their teens.
  • Parents should encourage their teens to participate in sports and other activities.
