How to Understand Yourself
Do you want to be somebody who is appreciated by your community? Do you want to be someone who is able to contribute positively to society? The ability to both understand and value yourself is important no matter what your goals for your future are.
You are what you think you are. If you respect yourself, others will respect you as well. .
Here are several steps to help you to know yourself deeper.
You have to know about the things which you value most and prioritize in your life. This can be parents, friends, nature, health, happiness, money, etc. Once you know what is most important to you, you can focus your decisions and daily life around these things. This is your life, not anyone else’s. You will not be happy tailing others’ goals for themselves.
Based on your first answer, ask yourself these questions:
“What makes me choose this thing as the most valuable one?”“How do my priorities effect life?”
“Do my actions reflect the things I value?”
“Do I appreciate and enjoy all kinds of activities related to my priorities?”
Through these questions, you will know whether you really value something or you wish you valued it. If you cannot give positive answers to the questions, you should need to be honest with yourself and pinpoint your priorities.
Once you have passed the second step, you may ask yourself questions as follows:
“Do I share what is valuable to me with others? If I do, how often?”
“When I have trouble which relates with what is important to me, will I solve it by myself or ask others?”
“How do I react when something bad happens to the things most valuable to me?”
“How do I see things which are not related to my priorities?”
As you can see, there is no specific answer to understanding yourself. This article gives guiding questions so that you can be the one who decides the final result.
After you have finished the steps above, you will have a better understanding toward yourself. Asking your parents, relatives, or best friends who will be honest with you, will also help you know yourself deeper.
