Teenage Insomnia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Teenagers face sleeping disorders, and insomnia is quite common among them. Insomnia among the teens can be caused mostly by emotional problems, anger, exam stress, embarrassment and adjustment problems.

The sleep time of an adolescent keep changing, and the internal rhythm of the body sets them to fall asleep very late. Insomnia is a common feature in teens, and this condition is called the Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS). Teenagers suffering from DSPS take lots of time to get to sleep, and they tend to fall asleep at the same time each night, regardless of when they go to bed.

Causes of Insomnia:

  • Teenage insomnia can start in the early childhood, and may continue throughout their young as well adult age.
  • Peer pressures in school, family and relationships can contribute to insomnia.
  • Hormonal changes also play an important role in contributing to insomnia.
  • Short-term insomnia can be caused by the changes in the normal sleep routines teenagers have.
  • Chronic insomnia can occur due to stress and medications associated with it.

Symptoms of Insomnia:

  • A teenager who suffers from insomnia always complains of frequent headaches.
  • They get moody all the time and suffer from mood swings.
  • Insomnia can cause extreme irritability, lack of concentration and a decrease in the overall performance of a teenager.
  • Teenagers are prone to accidents due to falling asleep while driving.
  • Teenagers wake up several times in the night due to lack of proper sleep and sometimes wake up earlier than usual.


  • Insomnia can be treated by following a proper sleep time, in order to get the body tuned to sleep at that particular time each night.
  • Teenagers should cut down the intake of daily caffeine.
  • Teenagers must ensure that they get regular exercise during the day.
  • They should try to establish a relaxing pattern before going to the bed.
  • Listening to music or taking a warm bath will help a teenager to fight insomnia.

  1. i am a teenage girl suffering from insomnia, i go to bed at 6 in the morning or sometimes even later, and then pop up at 10 im the morning ever morning, and nothing helps me. I lay down for bed at 8, and still dont fall asleep til atleast 6 or later. Sleeping pills dont help, not even prescribed ones. I don’t know what else to do, it interferes with my education; i mean i’m never late to school because i’m always still awake when it starts, but i tend to fall asleep during school. i even try running out all my energy, and even relaxing myself, but nothing works. my doctor can’t figure out what to do, i have been to many specialist, and nothing seems to help with it.

  2. I am a teenage girl as well and have suffered from insomnia. I didn’t know what to do for a while..
    But on my own I figured out a way to help myself and get myself into a regular sleep routine.
    I don’t necessarily have a bed time for myself. But I don’t go to sleep at 7 in the morning and wake up
    3 hours later anymore..
    I realized that getting enough excersize, as of running especially, and trying not to intake any sort of
    Caffeine or big amounts of sugar a few hours before I go to bed. Stress and personal problems have a big
    part in insomnia. Try staying relaxed before even laying down to go to bed. People tend to think about soooo many things as their lying there trying to fall asleep, its normal, but don’t stress yourself to thinking of any personal issues.
    it keeps you awake and distracted. Distraction is another thing..if ur a light sleeper, make sure
    Your able to have it quiet as possible while trying to fall asleep..listening to music might help too.
    When its really cold in the room, it relaxes you so much and you honestly sleep much better.
    Those are just some things that have seemed to help me.
    sometimes I still have bad nights…but for the most part I’ve helped myself.

  3. Hi there, i’m Brian, and I think I am suffering from insomnia. I stay up for 24 hours, or longer, and then I end up sleeping for about 4 hours, then rinse and repeat. I don’t know what to do, my parents won’t believe me, they say I just don’t try to sleep. I need a diagnostics.

  4. hello , im Valencia and i have trouble sleeping , and i never get sleepy until at least 6 and i don’t know why . its never happened before , but my mother says that i dont sleep because i always text or im always on Facebook . and i try to tell her . but i looked up symptoms of insomnia and i found that this is what is happening to me , i will let her know that it may be insomnia but then she probably wont believe me but ill try my best to get checked for it .

    Anxiety or irritability
    Concentration difficulties
    Daytime drowsiness
    Decreased attention span
    Depressed mood
    Difficulty falling asleep
    Difficulty remaining asleep
    Falling asleep during the day
    Feeling like you have not had enough sleep
    Poor work or school performance

    i have tried all possible remedies, but none of them work :(
    i want to tell my mum but she wont believe me or take me seriously, my dad would just laugh
    i have had insomnia since i was 7 , i would stay awake all night – this carried on until i was about 9 and a half. My parents wont believe me because, every time they would pass my room i would pretend to be asleep. The problem subsided when i was 10 but i had difficulty falling asleep, now i am 12 and i haven’t slept properly in over a week :(

    Can insomnia be diagnosed by a doctor? if so what kind of tests would you take, i f so, im going to ask my mum to book me an appointment

    help me ! its 1:30 in the morning and i still cant sleep :'(

  6. Hey I am a teenage as well I cant sleep like I go to sleep at 6am and then wake up at 10am or just sleep threw the whole day. I tried to tell my mom but she just says its because I am always texting or either on facebook. I checked the symptoms and I have them all :(
    help me try to convince her its 5:38 am and I am sleepy but cant close my eyes for 5 minutes :'(

  7. I’m 12 and I stay up until 3 in the morning then I have to wake up at nine!!
    How can I fall asleep? Do I need medication, a doctor or, just dealing with it? I’ve been unable to sleep since I was 11 and I’m about to turn 13! How can I sleep? Please help me D:

  8. I am a 17 year old girl, i have been suffering from insomnia for about 6 years. My life is verry stressfull, as i am the mother to my nephew, due to his mother’s lack of everything a mother should have. I work full time, and i am also going to school in a week. I too lay down at around 8 to 9, and i will not fall asleep until about 4 or 5, if i even fall asleep. I’ve been recently trying medicinal marijuana, and i found that it not only helps me fall asleep, it helps me stay asleep. I’ve done the sleeping pills, and the prescribed medicines, but nothing worked for me. For those who are able, i definately reccomend you try the marijuana, there’s nothing else that can get me into bed and asleep by 10.

    I go to my bed in 7 in the evening and i think if i not mistaken I sleep at 1 or 2 of the morning.
    i think that is insomnia because every night I always feel that and it is hard to fall asleep,sometimes i feel dizzy and i cant sleep even though my brain cant sleep.It is already 11:30 of the evening but i still awake,i feel little bit sleepy but i cant fall asleep,Do you help me in my problems and i go to school at exactly 5:30

  10. hey im 20 years old and thru out my whole life i’ve had periods of insomia, currently i stay awake until about 6:30 or 7 then wake up for class at about 9, i’ve had the odd time where i end up sleeping in all day, i checked symptoms and i got them all down to the clumbsyness and moodiness and irratibility. the best advice i can give to others is dont wait, if your parents dont believe you than take it upon yourself to get checked, rather miss a couple hours of school than many hours cause it normally catchs up with you and even if your in school your to tired and unfocused to learn. i should be taking my own advice tho.

  13. I’m a 16 year old girl . I usually fall asleep around 7 am & sleep through the whole day . Around 3 or 4 I get really bad headaches . I’m always very Moody . sometimes if I stay up for 2 days straight I can fall asleep at 9 pm for a couple days . But I always wake up at night for 3 or hours . Then I go back to staying up all night . Sleeping pills only work the first couple times I take them . My body becomes immune to medication fast . I’ve tried everything , nothing helps .

  14. I’m a sixteen year old girl and I suspect that I have insomnia. The time I go to sleep varies from 1am to 4 or 5 am and I don’t wake up until about 11:45 and sometimes even 2pm. I’ve tried going to sleep earlier but I will lay in bed with my eyes closed for hours just trying to fall asleep. I also read, although some may not believe things like this, it’s also stated that a large number of those with the zodiac sign Aquarius have insomnia. Also, the moody, clumsy, and lack of concentration all fit in with me. I’ll be tired all day and then be wide awake at night. Even when my mom wakes me up early I still don’t go to sleep until really really late. I’m going to talk to my psychologist about this to see if she thinks I may have insomnia as well. I already take pills for depression and I’ve dropped out of school and I have a lot of family problems. So I think there is a high chance I could have insomnia.

  16. I have suffered from insomnia for a few years, i took melatonin for a while which has cured it quite well, but whatever you do, DO NOT use marajuana without a doctors recommedation, it is a really REALLY bad idea, trust me.

  17. I believe i am suffering from a mild insomnia or sleeping problem. I dont stay up til 6 in the morning but i am tired all day and i lay in bed at 9 but then around 9:30 every night i become wide awake and cant fall asleep. If i go to bed early i wake up atleast 3-5 times during the night and then wake up early but if i go to bed around 1 i dont wake up except earlyy in the morning around 5:30-6. I dont know what to do. Help?
