Effects of Alcohol Abuse on Teens

Much to our relief, according to the latest research, alcohol and drug use among teenagers is declining. However, teenage alcohol abuse is still a main cause of concern among youngsters. The effects of teens using drugs and drinking can be quite dangerous. The teenage years are the time when the body is developing and growing, but alcohol abuse can add insurmountable burdens. Here are some of the most common effects of teenage alcohol abuse.

Unprotected Sex:

Teen alcohol abuse has been associated with unprotected and promiscuous sex. This in turn leads to a rise in unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Drinking and Driving:

Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of car accidents, which results in death among youngsters.

Rape Case:

Teenage drinking has been linked with rape. The chances of sexual harassment and rape increase when the assailant or victim has been drinking.


Drinking can aggravate anxiety and depression among teenagers. It therefore increases the rate of teenage suicide attempts.

Decreased Attention Span:

Teenage alcohol use can also decrease the ability to concentrate and pay attention. This may in turn lead to the development of ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Relationship Problems:

Teenagers who use alcohol are more likely to have difficulty with peer relationships, friendships, and relationships with teachers.

How to Prevent Teenage Alcohol Abuse:

  • By counseling teenagers about the side effects of drinking, parents can prevent teenage alcohol use.
  • Parents can also avoid their children drinking by setting good examples. Parents should never drive under the influence of alcohol, especially in front of their children.
  • Try to get to know the parents of your children’s friends, so that all of the parents can work together to keep their children away from drinking alcohol.
  • Every school should provide knowledge about the effects and dangers of underage drinking.
