Are you having trouble concentrating while studying? Or a big test coming up but you just can’t concentrate? Read the following tips to get ready for your exam to help you get the right mindset to prepare for your exam.
It’s better to study alone because you can concentrate better when solo. Unless you have bookworm friends or who are really serious about studies, stay away from group studies, for you are more likely to get off-topic. Save all the social events and entertainments for after your exam. Right now, you should only concentrate on your studies.
Create a Perfect Study Place
Choose one place or area where there are no distractions and use the place as your study room everyday. Keep away all the possible distractions or disturbances like television, music, your cell phone or computer when you are going to study. Consider studying alone at the library if you don’t have proper place available at home.
Get it All Out
Before you start digging to concentrate on studies, get all the necessary things out in front of you such as notes, study guides, books, pens or other necessary stationary items. Once you start studying, you should have no excuse of getting up and searching around for your books or notes.
Note Down all the Important Points
Keep one plain notebook or some plain paper with you. As you go through the chapters, take notes on the important points, or if you are going through only the important notes, rewrite them on the plain papers after you have understood or read them. For example, if you are reading history, note down the important facts, names and years on the sheet.
Take Healthy Snacks While You Study
Refrain from junk foods or other unhealthy foods if you wish to stay sharp and concentrate better while you study. Instead of junk foods, get some healthy foods such as whole grains, milk, peanut butter, leafy vegetables and fruits. Feeling sluggish while studying? Eat an apple or banana and get an energy boost, instead of energy drinks or caffeine.
Narrow it Down
Being prepared doesn’t always mean studying all the pages of the book, or studying every single word what your teacher has said. You’ll go crazy and end up not learning anything if you do this, especially if you don’t have much time to prepare for your exam. Instead be selective and concentrate only on those important points and topics and finish those first. And, if you still have time, you can go into finer details on other remaining topics.
Take a Break
Take 10-15 minute breaks every hour you study. During the break, you can do something mindless or relaxing such as listening to music, taking a walk or grab a quick snack. This will help you reduce your stress level and boost your concentration.
Once you finish studying one chapter or paper, test yourself by asking questions or rewriting all the important points you’ve covered. If you find anything wrong, correct yourself and go through it again.
Get Enough Sleep
Before your test, you may be tempted to stay awake and study the whole night or reduce your sleeping time. If you do this, you may simply lose the chance of getting A grade. Teens or students should get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night to keep your brain sharp.
Last, but not the least, it’s wise to start studying early instead of waiting at the last moment and struggling hard. People often think that no need of studying before, because whatever you have studied or memorize will not stay fresh on your mind. However, that’s absolutely not true. Try to take some time and review all the important notes everyday and throughout the semester. It sounds very tedious, but it will pay off in the end.
